As a Cota Robles Fellow, I investigate and uncover the ways that Black men and women, use cultural practice to express the fullness of their identity as subjects both within and apart from the state. Specifically, my work interrogates the ways that Soul, during the Civil Rights and Black Power movements, was used to assemble and organize Black individuals into discursive collectives (or publics) that all at once resisted white supremacy and affirmed Black identity.
