Ryan Koons

Ethnomusicologist Ryan A. Koons is a lecturer in the Departments of Musicology, Ethnomusicology, and World Arts & Cultures/Dance at UCLA, where he also directs the UCLA Early Music Ensemble. Koons' research crosses boundaries between sound, culture, and history. He has conducted research in collaboration with an American Indian community for over a decade, studying the ways ritual performance intersects with personhood, worldview, and environment.

A professional countertenor, Koons examines early music performance communities ethnographically, studying how people now make the music of then. He also researches traditional Scandinavian music, notably Swedish fiddling traditions. Koons is a professional vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, and the co-director of World Community Productions, a documentary multi-media company. His most recent publications have appeared in Ethnomusicology Review, and he has an article forthcoming in The Sage Encyclopedia of Music and Culture. RyanAKoons.com.
